The construction of the Bamia/Amelia’s Ward Primary School in Region Ten, initially slated for completion in July 2023, is nearing its final stages despite missing its third extension deadline of June 1, 2024.

According to Akani Blair, the General Foreman of Statement Investment Inc., the primary contractor for the project, the school is currently at 93% completion.

Blair expressed confidence that the remaining work, including the installation of specialty locks expected to arrive soon, will be finished to high standards.

He reassured stakeholders that efforts, including late-night shifts, are underway to ensure readiness for the upcoming academic year starting in September 2024.

Blair further noted that nearly 98% of the required construction materials are already on site.

The workforce, comprising 42 individuals with diverse skills, continues to push forward, with subcontractors scheduled strategically to fulfill specific tasks as needed.

Once completed, the Bamia Primary School will stand as a substantial educational facility within one of Guyana’s largest housing schemes, capable of accommodating approximately 800 students.

The expansive campus will feature 44 classrooms, a science lab, a media center, male and female sick bays, an auditorium, a gymnasium, a music room, and two smart classrooms.

Additionally, the school will include essential facilities such as staff rooms and administrative offices.

The construction project, awarded to Statement Investment Incorporated in November 2021 at a cost of $364 million, has faced several delays, with the original completion deadline of July 2023 being extended multiple times.

Despite concerns raised by regional leaders about potential delays affecting the school’s opening, Blair’s assurances and the steady progress indicate optimism that Bamia Primary School will be ready to welcome students as planned.
