Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Anil Nandlall, announced during the consideration of estimates and expenditures on Tuesday that the Constitutional Reform Commission is set to be appointed soon after the passage of Budget 2024.

Despite minor delays, President Irfaan Ali is expected to make the appointment shortly. Anil Nandlall disclosed that a facility on Middle Street, Georgetown, has been rented to accommodate the commission.

The chosen location is the same building that hosted the recent Madhia Dorm Fire Commission of Inquiry.

Nominations for individuals to serve on the 20-member commission began last year, with responses received from various stakeholder organizations.

The government is currently awaiting a response from the Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton, to proceed with the finalization of the commission.

Attorney General Nandlall mentioned that the three political parties holding one seat in parliament have already appointed attorney Timothy Jonas as their representative on the commission.

The Constitutional Reform Bill, passed in the National Assembly on November 7, 2022, aims to implement reforms before the next elections.

The government’s approach, as outlined in its 2020–2025 manifesto, emphasizes the inclusive participation of all Guyanese in the constitutional review process.
