The National Assembly’s Committee of Supply has initiated the examination of budgetary estimates for the fiscal year 2024, focusing on several constitutional agencies.
The review includes projected revenue estimates and expenditures.
During the examination, the allocation to the Office of the Leader of the Opposition was approved.
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Texiera, addressed questions from opposition MP Ganesh Mahipaul regarding a potential increase in the office’s budget.
Minister Texiera also faced inquiries about the $3.5 billion allocation to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), specifically concerning wages and salaries.
She provided clarification and stated that the allocation was based on advice received, taking into account information from 2023.
Upon the conclusion of the examination of estimates and expenditures under the ministry, the allocations were approved without changes.
Approval was granted for various entities, including the Audit Office ($1.3 billion), Public and Police Service Commission ($202.1 million), Teacher Service Commission ($184 million), and Public Procurement Commission ($270.9 million).
Funding approvals extended to the Supreme Court, DPP office, Office of the Ombudsman, Public Service Appellate Tribunal, Ethnic Relations Commission, Judicial Service Commission, and Rights Commissions of Guyana.
The budgetary consideration process continues as the Committee of Supply meticulously reviews allocations to various agencies, ensuring transparency and accountability in fiscal matters.
