Conciliation talks aimed at resolving a salary dispute between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) commenced today at the Ministry of Labour.
This development follows a stalemate in salary negotiations that necessitated third-party intervention.
The initial round of discussions lasted nearly four hours, during which Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain expressed optimism about the proceedings.
He praised the efforts of Chief Labour Officer Dhaneshwar Deonarine and his team, indicating that the discussions were productive and constructive.
President of the GTU, Mark Lyte, provided an overview of the session, noting that both sides were actively working towards initiating the conciliation process.
He mentioned that steps are being taken to draft conditions for resumption of work, which will facilitate further progress in the conciliation efforts.
The talks began at 10 a.m. and continued until 1:30 p.m., at which point the teams took a break for consultations with their principals and legal teams.
The resumption of these negotiations is anticipated to pave the way for a mutually agreeable resolution.
