Concerns regarding financial practices under the previous administration were brought to light at Monday’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting.
It was revealed that cheques totaling 1.706 million were issued without the necessary supporting documentation, raising questions about the handling of finances in Region Nine.
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, questioned why 38 cheques issued under the former government lacked the required vouchers and supporting documents.
Regional Executive Officer of Region Nine, Karl Singh, clarified that the documents in question were “subsequently provided” to the Audit Office.
However, Singh claimed that the initial inspection conducted by the Auditor General’s office was only a “walkthrough,” which did not include a detailed check of the safe at the sub-Treasury.
In response, Accountant General Jennifer Chapman expressed confusion over Singh’s explanation and requested further clarification.
She emphasized the importance of accountability and thorough documentation.
The Auditor General’s Office has committed to continuing its investigation to determine the cause of these discrepancies and ensure proper financial management practices in the region.
