As the holiday season approaches, shoppers across Guyana are gearing up to purchase gifts, decorations, and essentials for their festive celebrations.
However, amidst the excitement of the season, it’s important to shop wisely and avoid overspending.
The Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission (CCAC) is offering valuable advice to help consumers navigate the holiday shopping rush while staying within their budgets.
The CCAC emphasizes the importance of planning ahead. Shoppers are urged to set a budget before hitting the stores and avoid the temptation to overspend during the holidays.
According to the CCAC, setting a financial plan ensures that shoppers can enjoy the season without worrying about financial strain in the New Year.
Economist/Analyst at the CCAC, Kevon Simon, stressed the need for consumers to stick to their budgets and make informed purchases.
He advised shoppers to be cautious and avoid making unnecessary purchases that could lead to financial hardship later on.
In addition to budgeting, the CCAC reminds consumers to keep their receipts. Receipts are vital for returns, exchanges, or warranty claims, especially if the product is defective or doesn’t work as expected.
The CCAC encourages shoppers to inquire about return policies before making a purchase to ensure that their consumer rights are protected.
For those shopping online, the CCAC offers a word of caution: ensure that websites are reputable before making any purchases.
Shoppers should look for reviews and be wary of deals that appear too good to be true.
When making online payments, the CCAC recommends avoiding public Wi-Fi networks to protect personal and financial information from potential theft.
The CCAC also reports receiving 394 consumer complaints this year, totaling over 500 million dollars in value.
Of these complaints, 70% have been resolved, resulting in more than 73 million dollars being returned to consumers.
The most common areas of complaint include electronics, the automotive industry, and construction.
By following these tips and staying vigilant, consumers can make the most of their holiday shopping experience while safeguarding their finances.
