Commuters welcome Aubrey Barker Project Expansion

-by Shamiah Grant

The $1.45 billion Aubrey Barker four-lane road was officially completed and opened to the public on Sunday.

This critical corridor in South Georgetown now serves as a high-capacity link between the capital and the Ogle to Eccles bypass.

NCN News spoke with commuters to ascertain their views of the new four-lane thoroughfare.

Motorist, Phillip (only name given) said that the road now saves loads of time and is already bringing relief to him.

“You can get to your destination quicker. Because sometimes I work on the East Coast, and I live in this area, so instead of having to go all the way around and dealing with all the traffic, I can use this road,” he explained.

Leroy Nedd shared similar views, telling NCN News that he is now able to complete his daily travelling faster.

“I could ride freely and get my job done. So it is a very good move from the government,” he said.

Ian Weithers expressed, “I feel really good about it. I live in South, and I work at Ogle, so this is a much faster route for me to get to work,”

The four-lane highway was built to link the East Coast Corridor with the South Ruimveldt area to reduce traffic congestion.

The Aubrey Barker four-lane expansion included the widening of the road, installation of concrete drains, and the addition of pedestrians’ walkways and dedicated bicycle lanes.

Construction of this thoroughfare began in August 2022.
