Georgetown’s Mayor, Alfred Mentore, has pledged to pursue all delinquent taxpayers as the city council seeks to resolve its ongoing financial issues.
The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has faced repeated challenges in paying its workers’ wages and covering basic expenses, leading to concerns over the city’s cash flow.
In a recent statement, the Mayor emphasized that the council must collect outstanding revenues from both individuals and businesses.
Among the major defaulters is Maikawak Company Ltd., a company linked to the People’s National Congress (PNC), the party currently in control of the city council.
The company reportedly owes approximately 6.4 billion dollars to the council, an issue that has sparked calls for accountability, particularly given its significant debt.
While Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo publicly urged the city council to take action against such large-scale defaulters, including the PNC-related company, Mayor Mentore acknowledged the need for widespread efforts to tackle unpaid taxes.
However, he refrained from specifically targeting the PNC-owned company, stating that the council’s focus should be on ensuring that all taxpayers meet their obligations, including political parties, businesses, and citizens.
Mentore expressed his willingness to collaborate with citizens to find workable payment solutions but made it clear that tax holidays would not be granted.
Instead, he emphasized the need for practical approaches to resolve the city’s financial situation, ensuring that individuals and businesses contribute fairly to the city’s revenue.
