With approximately 8 days left until Christmas, the streets of Georgetown are bustling with activity as Guyanese embrace the holiday season, engaging in festive Christmas shopping.
Amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday rush, shoppers expressed their excitement and the early commencement of Christmas celebrations.
One shopper mentioned, “It’s very hectic; I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Christmas celebration starting so early, but I’m happy to be a part of it. It is bringing on the feeling for me.”
Another shopper shared, “This year I’m assisting my sister with some shopping; I’m shopping paint for her.”
Business owners also provided insights into the shopping trends, with one expressing optimism about the turnout, saying, “People are coming out and shopping for their kids, but I feel at the same time, it’s not as they usually would. We are hopeful it picks up next week. We’re thinking maybe they are focusing on home goods.”
Shoppers highlighted the significance of the government’s initiatives, such as the $25,000 cash grant and the retroactive salary increases, in positively impacting the holiday shopping experience.
One shopper stated, “The 25 thousand and the retro could go a long way, especially at this time. It could do something positive.”
Business owners in Georgetown acknowledged the increase in activity starting from the week and anticipated that the momentum would continue.
However, they also noted the high competition in the market.
As Guyanese dive into the Christmas shopping frenzy, there is an optimistic atmosphere, and shoppers are hopeful that local businesses will implement initiatives such as Christmas bargains and discounts during the holiday season.
