Chinese Nephrologist Highlights Importance of Doctor-Patient Collaboration in Managing Kidney Disease

Collaboration between doctors and patients is essential in managing chronic kidney disease, according to Dr. Tang Qiong, a nephrologist from the 19th Chinese Medical Brigade currently serving at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Dr. Tang has been working closely with local healthcare professionals to improve awareness and management of kidney-related conditions in Guyana.

Nephrology, which focuses on kidney health and involves both adult and pediatric medicine, has been a key service offered by the Chinese Medical Brigade during their one-year tenure.

Dr. Tang emphasized that managing chronic kidney disease is not just about treating the physical condition but also helping patients adapt to lifestyle changes and cope with mental health challenges associated with the illness.

Drawing from her experience, Dr. Tang highlighted the rapid development in the field of nephrology and the importance of sharing knowledge with doctors, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare staff.

This collaboration helps elevate awareness and improve patient care across the board.

Throughout their outreach activities, the brigade discovered that many people, particularly in remote hinterland communities, were unaware of their kidney conditions.

The team worked tirelessly to educate villagers about the disease, providing crucial information on managing their health, including dietary advice and lifestyle adjustments.

The Chinese Medical Brigade has made a significant impact since their arrival in September 2023, conducting screenings for nearly 13,000 patients and offering almost 2,000 procedures and surgical consultations in collaboration with local medical professionals.

In addition to nephrology, the brigade provided various specialty services, including acupuncture, contributing to the overall enhancement of healthcare services in Guyana.

Dr. Tang’s work and the efforts of the Chinese Medical Brigade underscore the importance of doctor-patient collaboration, education, and proactive health management, particularly for those living with chronic diseases like kidney disease.
