There has been significant growth in air travel to Guyana, as the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) records an 11 percent increase, moving closer to the one million annual visitor mark.
In 2023, CJIA processed over 729,000 passengers, marking an 11 percent increase compared to the previous year.
The month of December alone saw 64,134 passengers processed, up from 59,354 in 2022.
Hon. Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works, highlighted the transformative impact of the government’s programs and policies in positioning Guyana as a premier tourism hub.
Heavy investments in infrastructure development and services, coupled with increased airline presence, have contributed to this growth.
Additionally, CJIA handled over 11 million tonnes of cargo in 2023, representing a 25 percent increase from the previous year.
Cargo imports rose by 25 percent, while exports experienced a substantial 45 percent increase.
The airport managed 4,316 landings to date, attributed to the addition of new airlines, showcasing Guyana’s attractiveness for both passenger and cargo transport.
As Guyana continues to position itself as a regional hub, the sustained growth in air travel and cargo handling at CJIA signifies the success of the government’s efforts to boost the country’s connectivity and economic development.
