Chase Academy has emerged victorious in the KFC Goodwill International School Football Championship, clinching the title after a dramatic penalty shootout against Trinidad and Tobago’s St. Benedict College.
The match, held at the Ministry of Education ground on Sunday, was a hard-fought battle that ended in a 1-1 draw following regular and extra time.
Both teams had multiple opportunities to seize control during regulation, but despite displaying impressive skills, neither side could convert.
The match went into extra time, but with no goals scored, the outcome was ultimately decided by penalties.
The game reached a nail-biting climax in sudden death penalties, with Chase Academy goalkeeper Flavio La Rose proving to be the hero.
La Rose made two crucial saves, including one that sealed the win for his team, ensuring Chase Academy’s first KFC Goodwill title.
Team captain Brian Wharton reflected on the team’s mindset going into the final, expressing the pride and determination that propelled them to victory after a loss to St. Benedict College in the preliminary round.
In the third-place play-off, defending champions Clarendon College of Jamaica defeated Annai 7-2.
Nicholy Forbes was the standout player for Clarendon, scoring twice in the 25th and 52nd minutes of the match.
Chase Academy was awarded the US$5,000 first prize, while St. Benedict College received US$3,000 to support school projects.
