Champs GDF Victorious in KFC Elite League Opener; GFF Unveils International Flood Lights

Defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) showcased their prowess and confidence on Sunday as they commenced season 6 of the elite league with a triumph at the Guyana Football Federation National Training Center.

Meanwhile, the Vergenoegen-based Slingerz Football Club made a remarkable return to the league with an impressive victory of their own.

The matches took place under the newly installed international floodlights at the training center, marking a significant development in the league’s infrastructure.

In the feature clash, the 2023 elite league champions, Guyana Defence Force Football Club, secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Santos Football Club.

Despite Santos displaying resilience in the first half, a defensive lapse in the 42nd minute allowed midfielder Ryan Hackett to unleash a powerful left-footed strike, putting GDF in the lead.

Malcom Miggins extended GDF’s advantage with a goal in the 58th minute, before Santos managed a consolation goal through Ryan Dowding in the 78th minute.

Meanwhile, Slingerz Football Club exacted sweet revenge on Berbice’s Mondedderlust FC with a commanding 7-0 victory. Slingerz, who had to overcome challenges to secure their place in the league, demonstrated their dominance with a stellar performance.

Marcus Tudor shone brightly, netting five goals, while Darren Niles and Ricardo Halley contributed one goal each.

Speaking to NCN Sport after the game, Marcus Tudor expressed satisfaction with their performance, highlighting their determination to win the league.

The upcoming matches will feature Ann’s Grove United against two-time champions Fruta Conquerors and Western Tiger against Buxton United Football Club.

Matches will continue every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the National Training Center in Providence.
