…To Advance The Regional Metrology System
Delegates from the 15 Caricom metrology institutions and the Dominican Republic are in Guyana for the Caribbean Metrology Cooperation (CARIMET) Committee meeting and workshop, which is being hosted by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS)- which is responsible for metrology.
The CARIMET Committee Meeting and Workshop is being facilitated by the CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ).
The group will assess metrology issues in the Caribbean, develop a framework to mitigate those issues, and review the five-year Strategic Plan 2021-2025. They will also prepare the first draft of the CARIMET Technical Framework document.
According to the Technical officer for CARIMET, Nicolai Best, the goal is to strengthen the region’s metrology framework, so systems can be strategically advanced. He further explained that the metrology legislation will also be reviewed for improvement, noting that the law is outdated and must be amended to suit the modern metrology system.
Metrology services include the verification for weighing and measuring devices used in trade and devices used within the health, transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors to ensure equity in trade, consumer protection, and safety.
The GNBS was awarded the International Organization of Legal Metrology CEEMS award, this year for its outstanding contribution to the development of industrial legal metrology in Guyana.
The Bureau’s mission is to develop and implement the National Quality Infrastructure in partnership with key stakeholders, in order to maintain sustainable socioeconomic development and consumer protection.
