BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS – President Dr. Irfaan Ali is attending the 48th CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Barbados, which runs from February 19 to 21.

The summit brings together regional leaders to address a range of pressing issues impacting the Caribbean, including trade barriers, Haiti’s political situation, food security, and energy integration.

President Ali emphasized the importance of CARICOM staying attuned to the changing geopolitical landscape while prioritizing key regional matters.

One major topic under discussion is the reduction of trade barriers within the region.

The private sector has raised concerns over these barriers, and the Heads of Government are set to explore solutions that would facilitate easier trade and foster economic integration across CARICOM nations.

The political instability in Haiti is also high on the agenda, with CARICOM continuing to support Haiti’s transition toward democratic elections.

Leaders are seeking stronger international partnerships to help stabilize the nation and pave the way for its recovery.

Another significant focus is food security, especially in light of the setbacks caused by natural disasters in 2024, which negatively impacted food production across the region.

In addition to this, energy security and regional energy integration are crucial topics, with Guyana playing a leading role in the development of an integrated energy strategy for the region.

The summit’s discussions are expected to lead to important regional commitments that will address these challenges and enhance the Caribbean’s resilience in the face of both global and local pressures.
