Today, the heads of several Caribbean nations convened in Trinidad for a regional cricket conference focused on the theme of “Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket.”
This initiative arose from the last CARICOM heads’ meeting, where it was collectively decided to explore the business trajectory of the sport.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali delivered an address, emphasizing the significance of the conference and the potential impact of the ideas shared on the regional game if implemented.
As an ardent cricket enthusiast himself, President Ali underscored areas he believes require attention to initiate the process of revitalizing the game.
In addition to discussing on-field matters, President Ali highlighted the broader impact of cricket beyond the playing arena, particularly in enhancing the overall fan experience.
The growing demand for cricket in the United States over recent years has been noted, with matches hosted in several states by cricket’s world-governing body, the ICC, and the organisers of the Caribbean Premier League.
President Ali expressed cautious optimism about this development while acknowledging its potential impact on the Caribbean game.
President Ali revealed ongoing discussions between the ICC, CWI, CPL, and the government of Guyana aimed at creating a product that would bolster the game’s strength.
The two-day conference boasts participation from various stakeholders, including cricket legends, former and current players, clubs, coaches, and administrators.
The gathering signifies a concerted effort to address the challenges facing West Indies cricket and explore opportunities for its growth and development.
