Caribbean Culture Exchange Program Inspires School Children in Georgetown

Unique Arts Entertainment, a local cultural group founded by Guyanese Kelton Jennings in 2007, is making significant strides through cultural exchange programs aimed at addressing social issues.

The group, in collaboration with the National Cultural Exchange Program between Caribbean countries, has launched a series of cultural workshops at schools in Georgetown, including Queen’s College and St. Rose’s High School.

The three-day workshop, which started yesterday, is part of a broader initiative to foster cultural awareness and exchange among Caribbean nations.

In an interview with NCN News, Kelton Jennings, National Director of the Caribbean Culture Exchange Program, shared insights into the program’s recent activities.

Jennings highlighted a recent cultural exchange visit where 25 Guyanese dancers and drummers traveled to Suriname to participate in cultural celebrations.

In return, Suriname’s national director, Tanuya Manichand, has brought a contingent of 55 performers to Guyana to continue this cultural exchange, conducting workshops in local schools.

Manichand, Director of Kaya-Home in Africa, spoke about the diverse cultural elements represented in the workshops, which include a Japanese dance group, young talents from Suriname, and an Indian folk dance group.

The workshops feature performances and cultural training for children aged 6-12 years, highlighting the rich diversity of the Caribbean.

The Unique Arts Entertainment group has been dedicated to promoting cultural dialogue and raising social awareness through its performances.

The group’s efforts have received support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport, as well as the Ministry of Education, underscoring the importance of cultural exchange in fostering social cohesion and understanding among Caribbean communities.

As the workshops continue, Unique Arts Entertainment remains committed to inspiring a cultural awakening across the nation, using the arts as a powerful tool to connect young minds with their rich heritage and address social issues through creative expression.
