CANU Reports Significant Reduction in Drug Trafficking

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Agency (CANU) has announced a notable reduction in the trafficking of narcotics, signaling successful efforts in combating the illicit drug trade.

James Singh, the Director of CANU, provided an update on the agency’s achievements in curbing drug trafficking.

Over the past year, CANU seized more than 75 kilograms of cocaine and over 1200 kilograms of marijuana, which were intended for overseas territories.

Director Singh highlighted that 93 cases were made during the year, leading to charges against 80 individuals and 47 convictions.

Singh emphasized the effectiveness of CANU’s systems and partnerships with local law enforcement, pointing out the increased interception of drugs bound for overseas territories as an indicator of their success.

A new challenge for CANU is the influx of narcotics into Guyana from overseas territories for further trans-shipment.

To address this, the agency is strengthening partnerships with local and international bodies and enhancing its capacity through training initiatives.

In addition to ongoing efforts, CANU is in the process of constructing a new headquarters this year.

Funds have also been allocated to equip the agency with technological resources and other necessities.

CANU’s success in reducing drug trafficking reflects its commitment to securing the country against the illicit drug trade, and the agency continues to evolve its strategies to address emerging challenges.
