The East Coast Demerara community of Buxton celebrated a significant milestone on Friday, as it honored its newest centenarian, Francis Edwina Azore, affectionately known as “Cousin Francis.”
Born on November 8, 1924, Azore’s remarkable century-long journey has been marked by love, resilience, and a strong sense of independence.
The milestone was celebrated with a gathering at Tipperary Hall, where family, friends, and local leaders gathered to honor Azore’s life and legacy.
When asked about the secret to her long life, Azore responded with a smile, attributing it to her faith in God: “My secret is my savior,” she said.
“He has given me strength to survive many challenges.”
Even at 100, Mrs. Azore continues to live independently, taking care of her home and daily chores.
“I clean my house, wash my clothes, and take care of everything for myself,” she proudly shared.
Her family, including her granddaughter, June Wilson, who describes her as both a grandmother and a second mother, shared heartfelt tributes during the celebration.
“It’s amazing, I don’t feel like a granddaughter but more like a daughter,” Wilson expressed. “With God, all things are possible.”
The celebration was made even more special with the presence of Azore’s children, including Leslie Beckles, who celebrated his birthday alongside his mother.
“It’s a great joy to see this day. My mom has been with us through everything, and I’m proud to witness this milestone,” said Beckles.
Throughout her life in Buxton, Azore has been a beloved figure, admired for her wisdom, kindness, and dedication to her family and community.
The event was a testament to her enduring spirit, reminding everyone of the importance of family, resilience, and a heart full of love.
Azore, the mother of eight children—seven of whom are still alive—continues to inspire her community and family with her strength and vitality.
