Guyana’s tourism sector is set for continued expansion as government moves to grow the industry through Budget 2026.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Susan Rodrigues says the measures are aimed at increasing visitor arrivals, supporting small businesses, and positioning Guyana as a major destination by 2030.

She says the budget focuses on people-centered growth and sets the foundation for delivering the government’s commitments.

“For us to make Guyana a desirable destination for tourists, visitors, people who come into Guyana for leisure or business, we have, we realized that there were some immediate challenges that we had to address. Lack of accommodation was one of them. And so what happened? We invited expressions of interest for the construction of hotels, and we have had tremendous success in that regard,” the minister said.

Over the past five years, Guyana has expanded its tourism capacity, attracting major international hotel brands and increasing accommodation across the country.

Fifteen new hotels are currently under construction, while expanded airlift has added nine new airlines and additional regional routes.

We have added nine new airlines to the airlines that are coming to Guyana, adding new routes. If you want to grow your visitor arrivals, you have to give them the vehicle to do that. you need the airline coverage to bring people here. You need more seats. You need the seats, the airlift, you need the accommodation to have people, and then you have to have investment in your tourism product to enhance the tourism experience for the visitors coming here.”

In 2025, Guyana saw over 453,000 visitors, primarily from the United States and the Caribbean, due to recent investments in tourism.

This growth is enhancing small businesses, including tour operators and transport providers, especially in hinterland areas.

The government aims to achieve three million annual passengers by 2030 with continued investment.
