Budget 2024: Over $100 Billion Allocated for Housing Development, Water & Sanitation

Guyana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, recently unveiled the annual fiscal plan for 2024, demonstrating a multifaceted strategy to address housing demands, enhance water sanitation, and manage solid waste.

The budget, exceeding $100 billion, reflects a commitment to critical sectors that impact citizens’ well-being and overall quality of life.

The housing development initiative receives a substantial allocation of $78 billion, focusing on advancing infrastructure in various regions across the country.

Ongoing projects include developments in areas such as Amelia’s Ward, Balthyock, Burma, Charity, De-Endragt, and several others.

Complementing these efforts, additional supportive housing assistance programs have been introduced to broaden accessibility.

Allocating $22.5 billion to address water sanitization challenges, the government aims to significantly improve the water sector.

Plans include upgrading and extending water supply systems, constructing wells, and procuring new water treatment plants in strategic locations.

A further $14 billion has been set aside for various interventions, benefitting over 400,000 residents and emphasizing the government’s commitment to water quality improvement.

In addressing solid waste management, $2.6 billion has been allocated to enhance infrastructure and related initiatives.
