Breast Cancer Awareness Month got underway in Georgetown on Friday, with the Guyana Cancer Foundation hosting its annual breast cancer tree-wrapping ceremony on Main Street.
The event brought together breast cancer survivors, fighters, caregivers and supporters, as the Foundation launched a month of activities aimed at raising awareness and encouraging early detection.
Trees along Main Street were wrapped in vibrant shades of pink, accompanied by music and activities highlighting the importance of breast cancer awareness.
For some of the women present, however, the occasion was more than a symbolic launch.
It was an opportunity to reflect on their personal battles with the disease and share messages of hope with others who may be facing a similar diagnosis.
In Guyana, breast cancer remains a major health concern among women, with health officials continuing to stress the importance of early detection. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month gets underway, the Guyana Cancer Foundation is offering 100 free breast cancer screenings to women at Global Imaging, located at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. The initiative aims to give more women access to screening and encourage early detection of the disease. At the Georgetown Public Hospital, 107 breast cancer cases were recorded between January and August 2026, highlighting the continued impact of the disease on women in Guyana.
