Black Belly Sheep Project to Benefit Vulnerable Groups

The Black Belly Sheep initiative, launched in 2023 by President Irfaan Ali, will soon expand its benefits to individuals with disabilities across Guyana.

This project, aimed at providing sustainable income opportunities for Guyanese, is progressing rapidly.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha revealed that over 20 farmers have already benefited from the initiative, and more are set to follow, including vulnerable groups.

As the arrival of another flock from Barbados is awaited, facilities are being constructed in the Ellis, Mahaica Mahaicony Abary area.

A breeding program combining Black Belly sheep with local breeds is already underway, showing promising results with over 300 local births recorded.

Farmers are expected to return 10 percent of the purebred sheep within three lambing periods.

The initiative highlights the government’s commitment to empowering various sectors of society through innovative agricultural programs.
