Women from Coomacka and neighboring communities are enhancing their culinary skills through a training program offered by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).
Spearheaded by Venice Thom, a seasoned professional with two decades of experience in the culinary industry, the program is hosted at Coomacka Primary School’s kitchen.
The initiative aims to equip 14 women, aged between 26 and 54, with comprehensive skills in commercial food preparation.
The curriculum covers cooking techniques, recipes, kitchen safety, and includes supplementary classes in mathematics and English from Mondays to Thursdays.
Thom expressed confidence that by the program’s conclusion in four months, participants will be prepared to either establish their own food ventures or secure employment in established food businesses.
Trainees like Yomona Fraser and Shelisa Codogan expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to expand their culinary knowledge and fulfill long-held aspirations.
Natoya Fredricks highlighted the program’s positive impact on her entrepreneurial ambitions.
During NCN’s visit, trainees were actively engaged in practical sessions, creating dishes such as mince swirls, with plans to advance to main course meal preparations soon.
This initiative not only empowers women with valuable skills but also supports local economic development by fostering small business growth within Coomacka and surrounding communities.
