The Agriculture Science Department at Bishops High School held its 2nd Biennial Agriculture Business Expo today, showcasing the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of students in the agricultural sector.
Launched in 2022, the event introduced the department’s own product, Wema, and has since become an important platform for students to explore and develop their business skills in agriculture.
David Hackett and Kuvina Singh, founders of Wema, spoke about the significance of the expo in providing students with real-world exposure to business operations in agriculture.
Students like Cameron Adams and Aaliyah Henry shared their experiences, highlighting the hands-on learning and the potential for turning farm produce into marketable products, including food and haircare products.
Adams noted how the expo provides practical knowledge beyond traditional subjects like food and nutrition, while Henry emphasized the exposure and business opportunities it has brought.
Agriculture teacher Jane Rampersaud underscored the importance of teaching students not just theoretical knowledge, but practical skills that will serve them in the workforce, particularly as agriculture plays a key role in Guyana’s economy.
The top-performing team at the expo will be given the chance to showcase their product at GuyExpo 2024, further boosting their exposure and growth.
