Over the weekend, Guyana’s Carlos Petterson-Griffith showcased exceptional talent and dedication as he represented the nation at the prestigious Sheffield Powerlifting Championship in England.
Despite narrowly missing the world 93kg total record by 13 kg, Petterson-Griffith’s performance stood out among the world’s elite powerlifters.
Franklyn Wilson, President of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF), expressed pride in Petterson-Griffith’s remarkable showing, highlighting the significance of his achievement in strengthening the foundation for the sport’s advancement.
Wilson commended Petterson-Griffith’s hard work and dedication behind the scenes, emphasizing the bright future that lies ahead for powerlifting in Guyana.
Coach Dexter Jones and his assistant Jamie McDonald also lauded the GAPLF for embracing technological advancements in athlete preparation.
They believe that Guyana’s adoption of such innovations will position the country favorably for international competitions in the future.
Petterson-Griffith, reflecting on his performance, expressed his determination to target world records in squats and deadlifts in the coming months as he strives to become a world champion in his 93 kg class.
Notably, he currently holds the squat record for South America, having achieved a remarkable 332.5 kg at the Sheffield championship.
Although his record briefly held the world title, it was surpassed by USA’s Gavin Adin, who lifted 337 kg at the same championship.
As Petterson-Griffith sets his sights on further accomplishments, the Guyanese powerlifting community eagerly anticipates his continued success on the international stage.
