Basketball Community Mourns the Loss of Coach Dave Causeway

The basketball community is in mourning following the passing of Dave Causeway, a former national player turned coach, who died on Tuesday.

Causeway’s death has deeply impacted not only the Kwakwani community but also the broader basketball scene in Guyana.

Ann Gordon, head coach of Kwakwani basketball and Causeway’s long-time mentor, expressed profound sorrow over the loss.

Gordon, who coached Causeway from a young age, described him as more than just a player—he was like a son to her.

She praised his basketball IQ and dedication, noting that he excelled both as a player and as a coach.

Under Gordon’s guidance, Causeway became an accomplished coach, contributing significantly to the development of local talent.

He played a pivotal role in mentoring players and was instrumental in the success of the Kwakwani Untouchables.

Notably, Causeway’s efforts helped produce Stanton Rose, the national captain who led Guyana to its sole regional title in 2018.

Gordon highlighted Causeway’s unwavering commitment to the sport and the community, calling basketball his “religion” and emphasizing his dedication to giving back to the community.

In response to Causeway’s passing, the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), led by Jermaine Slater, extended its condolences, describing him as an “exceptional soul.”

GABA acknowledged Causeway’s contributions as a member of the last Guyana Junior National Championship team, a club champion with Bounty Colts, and the founder and coach of the Kwakwani Untouchables.

The basketball community will remember Causeway as a true champion, whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
