Aubrey Hutson Supports Changes to National Schools Athletics Championships

By Travis Seymour | January 8, 2025

Aubrey Hutson, the President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), has expressed support for the proposed changes to the National Schools Athletics Championships, stating that the adjustments are aimed at improving the efficiency and performance of athletes.

Hutson highlighted that the proposed changes are designed to bring structure to the event, ensuring better organization and more effective competition.

“We are putting serious structure in place to ensure better athletics,” Hutson remarked during an interview.

One of the key changes in the proposal is the restructuring of the championship into separate primary and secondary school categories.

The plan, introduced by Nicholas Fraser, Head of Allied Arts under the Ministry of Education, also includes aligning the competition with the global calendar.

This shift aims to establish a national program with enhanced structural changes that will benefit athletes across the country.

While the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) has managed the championship for over six decades, it has not yet confirmed whether they will continue to be involved in the event this year.

Hutson expressed hope that the GTU will support the proposed structure.

The AAG is part of the team organizing the Secondary Schools Championship, which will follow a new format.

This format will see all schools across Guyana conducting their inter-house sports events, followed by inter-school meets within each educational district.

The district winners, along with the next best 10 athletes from each event, will advance to the National Inter-Schools Championship.

The championship is scheduled to take place in March of this year at the Leonora Track and Field Stadium.
