The land along Carifesta Avenue, designated for the Georgetown Seafront Resort and Convention Centre, is indisputably owned by the State, according to Attorney General Anil Nandlall.
His remarks come in response to City Mayor Alfred Mentore, who has raised concerns over the ownership and usage of the property.
On Monday, the Mayor disputed the State’s ownership of the land, claiming that the government failed to respond to a letter sent by the City Council over a year ago.
He also stated that the council is now considering legal action.
However, the Attorney General maintains that the issue was already addressed, with legal documentation confirming the State’s ownership of the property.
He previously advised the City Council that if they possess contrary legal evidence, they should pursue the matter through the courts.
To date, the council has not initiated any legal proceedings.
Nandlall further emphasized that any legal challenge will be vigorously defended and, if deemed frivolous, those responsible may face significant legal costs and liabilities for financial losses incurred due to litigation.
The $300 million Georgetown Seafront Resort and Convention Centre project was officially launched in February 2024, marking a major investment in the city’s tourism and hospitality sector.
