Attorney General Anil Nandlall has voiced apprehensions regarding the potential economic ramifications of a recent court ruling.

In an interview with NCN, Attorney General Nandlall highlighted the significant implications of the High Court’s ruling on the GTU matter for Guyana’s economy and industrial sector.

He expressed concern that the ruling sets a precedent for all industrial actions to be adjudicated by the court, which he believes could adversely affect the economy.

Nandlall emphasized the broad-reaching effects of the ruling, describing them as having “domino effects” with “implications of enormous proportions” that extend throughout the investment climate, private sector, and industrial landscape of the country.

Moreover, Nandlall raised concerns about judicial overreach and the infringement on the separation of powers, asserting that while the court has the authority to interpret the law, it does not have the power to enact law.

He suggested that any changes to the law should be addressed through parliamentary processes.

The court case in question revolves around the government’s decision to deduct pay for strike days by teachers and to cease collecting dues on behalf of the Union.

Nandlall argued that the government’s actions were a favor to the GTU, as other unions handle their own dues collection.

As the situation unfolds, concerns persist regarding the broader implications of the ruling on Guyana’s economic landscape.
