Attorney General Denies Politicalization of Guyana Defence Force

By Samuel Sukhnandan

Attorney General Anil Nandlall has firmly rebutted allegations suggesting that the government is politicizing the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), following claims made by opposition MP Amanza Walton-Desir.

The controversy emerged after President Irfaan Ali shared a convivial moment with senior GDF ranks on his birthday, a gesture captured in photographs and shared on social media.

Walton-Desir criticized this interaction as a form of political manipulation.

However, Nandlall dismissed these assertions, highlighting the historical precedent of presidents engaging openly with the GDF.

He emphasized that such interactions are not unusual and do not imply political interference.

Nandlall underscored the primary duty of the GDF: safeguarding Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, with allegiance sworn to the constitution.

He affirmed the GDF’s professionalism and commitment to its core mandate.

Contrary to allegations, Nandlall asserted that the GDF is currently at its zenith in professionalism, while the Guyana Police Force (GPF) boasts unprecedented morale and resources.

These statements aim to allay concerns and uphold the integrity of the armed forces.
