Attorney General Anil Nandlall Foresees Significant Boost to Justice Sector in Budget 2024

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, has announced substantial improvements to the justice sector in 2024, supported by a budget allocation of $6.2 billion.

This commitment, aimed at preserving public trust and ensuring citizen safety, reflects the government’s dedication to enhancing the delivery of justice.

During a ‘Budget in Focus’ program on NCN, Nandlall emphasized that the allocated funds will not only contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve justice delivery but will also advance Guyana’s legislative agenda, focusing on transparency and efficiency.

From a physical infrastructure perspective, the government plans to construct new courthouses across Guyana and undertake repairs and rehabilitation where necessary.

The initiative includes increasing the number of judges and implementing an e-litigation program for the judiciary, as announced by Chancellor Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards.

Nandlall highlighted ongoing efforts, such as financing the e-litigation program and investing in technical capacity.

Additionally, he mentioned completed programs like the Prosecutorial Programme in 2022, which contribute to reducing the burden on the justice system and enhancing access nationwide.

The comprehensive approach outlined by Attorney General Anil Nandlall indicates a commitment to significant advancements in the justice sector, aligning with broader goals of transparency, efficiency, and improved access to justice for all citizens.
