The government of Guyana, under President Irfaan Ali’s leadership, has once again demonstrated its commitment to the country’s youth and sports development with an unprecedented allocation of $8 billion for sports in the 2025 national budget.
This significant increase in funding follows a pattern of consistent investment over the past four years, which has notably transformed the sports landscape across the nation.
The allocation is expected to provide further incentives for athletes, complete the construction of several sports facilities, and support the continued development of local sports associations and federations.
Leaders from various local sports bodies have expressed their appreciation for the budgetary boost.
Ryan Dey, the head of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, highlighted the positive effects of the government’s ongoing investment in the sport, emphasizing that it will continue to drive growth within the sector.
Similarly, Franklyn Wilson, President of the Guyana Amateur Power Lifting Federation, commended the record allocation, noting that the investment in sports had almost doubled compared to previous years.
In 2024, the government allocated $4.6 billion for the advancement of sports, with a portion of these funds directed toward the continued upgrade of sports grounds across the country.
The construction of multi-purpose sports halls and facilities in various regions was also prioritized, ensuring wider access to sporting infrastructure.
The 2025 budget marks a new milestone in Guyana’s commitment to sport, with a focus on completing sports halls, community grounds, and stadiums, alongside providing greater support for athletes and sports associations to reach their full potential.
