Assistant Commissioner Calvin Brutus Faces 21 Additional Charges

By Nakasia Logan, NCN News – November 22, 2024

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Calvin Brutus, has been slapped with 21 new charges, increasing the total to 252 charges against him.

These latest charges were brought before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, who granted Brutus bail amounting to 1.4 million dollars.

The new charges are categorized under obtaining money by false pretense, misconduct in public office, and liability of a public officer.

The charges stem from incidents allegedly occurring between December 1, 2023, and January 31, 2024, when Brutus, along with Sergeant Latoya Brumell and businessman Corwin Nicholson, allegedly defrauded the Guyana Police Force by requesting funds for goods that were never supplied.

Brutus, Brumell, and Nicholson were jointly charged with seven counts of obtaining money by false pretense.

Each received bail set at 700,000 dollars, with 100,000 per charge.

In addition, Brutus faces 14 separate charges related to misconduct in public office and liability of a public officer, for which he was granted bail of 350,000 dollars.

The charges accuse him of issuing bank cheques to 3D Construction for goods that were never delivered.

Nicholson also received a separate charge of obtaining money by false pretense, for which he was granted bail totaling 1.05 million dollars.

The trio is scheduled to return to court on January 31, 2025. Since Brutus’s initial appearance in this financial corruption case, four other individuals have been implicated.
