The AP Invitational Athletics Meet is set to return to the National Track and Field Center in Guyana on June 22nd this year, serving as a crucial Olympic qualifier.
The Aliann Pompey Invitational, a World Athletics sanctioned Continental Tour meet, was hosted for several years before taking a five-year hiatus due to the pandemic and the resurfacing of the artificial track at Leonora.
This year, it returns just a month before the Paris Olympic Games, scheduled for July 26th to August 11th in France.
Aliann Pompey, the founder of the AP Invitational, expressed her excitement for the event’s return, noting its special significance as local athletes prepare for the Olympics.
Pompey highlighted the event’s importance for young athletes and the broader athletic community, emphasizing the high level of competition and opportunities for athletes to qualify for the Olympics.
Pompey, who specialized in the 400 meters during her competitive career, represented Guyana at multiple Summer Olympics and World Championships from 2000 to 2012.
Her achievements include winning a gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal in 2010.
Currently, Pompey serves as the PANAM Sports Athlete’s Commission President, Head Coach of St. John’s University in New York City, and International Olympic Committee’s Athlete Liaison.
The return of the AP Invitational promises to be an event to remember, with high expectations for local athletes to perform well and secure their places in the upcoming Olympic Games.
