Scores of Lindeners gathered to witness the excitement of the third annual Easter Basketball Tournament in Victory Valley, Wismar, and Linden.

Organized by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd in collaboration with the Embassy of China in Guyana, the one-day tournament showcased the talent and enthusiasm of local basketball players.

The knockout tournament featured five categories, including boys under 10, under 16, a girls’ category, boys under 18, and seniors.

In the boys under 10 category, Team A emerged victorious over Team B by a single point. Similarly, in the under 16 category, Team A secured the championship with a narrow one-point win over Team B.

The girls’ game also witnessed a close contest, with Team B claiming victory by just one point.

In a thrilling finale, the Under 18 boys’ teams found themselves tied at 17-all at the end of regulation time.

It was Camelo Manshoning of Team A who scored the decisive two points, securing the win for his squad.

However, it was the senior division that stole the spotlight, with the Tappin Brothers of Victory Valley dominating the game and securing a narrow 20-19 victory.

Minister Hugh Todd highlighted that the tournament aligns with President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s vision to promote and advance youth development initiatives in the region.

Ambassador of China, Guo Haiyan, joined Minister Todd in watching the games, showing her continued support for the tournament since its inception in 2022.

The winning teams were awarded championship trophies and prizes, while all other participants received medals and tokens of appreciation.

Minister Todd’s commitment to youth sports was underscored by the refurbishment of the Victory Valley Royals Basketball court in February 2022, with an investment of $2.5 million dollars.

The event not only provided an opportunity for friendly competition but also fostered community spirit and camaraderie among participants and spectators alike.
