Annual John Lewis Rugby Memorial Tournament Returns with Exciting Lineup

By Tyriq Walters

Rugby enthusiasts and sports fans alike are gearing up for the highly anticipated third edition of the annual John Lewis Rugby memorial, scheduled to take place this weekend at the National Park.

With four teams set to compete, the tournament promises thrilling matches and fierce competition on the field.

Godfrey Broomes, Vice-President of the Guyana Rugby and Football Union (GRFU), shared insights into what attendees can expect from this year’s tournament.

Broomes highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing its role in showcasing the talent and athleticism of rugby players in Guyana.

“In 2022, we hosted the first annual John Lewis memorial tournament, followed by a successful edition in 2023. Now, in 2024, it’s set to be hosted on March 16 and 17 at the National Park,” remarked Broomes. “Rugby fans can expect scintillating matches contested by four teams.”

One notable aspect of this year’s tournament is the opportunity for players to catch the eye of scouts, as the event will be live-streamed. Broomes encouraged participants to give their best performance, emphasizing that they are always under the spotlight.

“Players, come out and do your best. Remember that you are always on show, as persons will always be watching. We will also be broadcasting it, so if there is a scout looking to recruit someone from Guyana, as they have done many times in the past, you could be selected,” stated Broomes.

The four teams set to compete in the tournament are Pepsi Hornets, Police Falcons Rugby Club, Guyana Defence Force Rugby Club, and Panthers Rugby Club. Broomes also took the opportunity to dispel misconceptions about rugby, emphasizing its status as a gentleman’s sport.

“For those who want to come out and watch the match, I’ll just remind them that it’s a gentlemen’s sport. Contrary to what most people think, rugby is not just a sport played by rough individuals. It’s an exciting way for us to showcase our athletic ability on the field,” clarified Broomes.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off at 11:00 hours on Saturday and 15:00 hours on Sunday, promising two action-packed days of rugby excitement at the National Park.
