Head teachers in Region Ten gathered for their annual meeting at the Kingdom Style Restaurant in Amelia’s Ward to strategize on improving matriculation rates in 2024.
Regional Education Officer Nichola Matthews presented the annual report for 2023 and outlined goals for the upcoming year, emphasizing the need to stay competitive, especially in the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA).
While acknowledging the challenges faced by Region Ten, Matthews highlighted the region’s achievement as the top performer in the country for NGSA.
She expressed optimism about overcoming challenges in 2024.
La Shanna Anderson, Secondary Officer at the Department of Education, Region 10, commended the Minister of Education for the commitment to establish a new Christianburg Wismar Secondary School.
For 2024, Anderson outlined the objective of improving matriculation rates by enhancing curriculum delivery through increased staffing in critical areas and providing teachers with necessary training and resources.
Anderson urged more collaboration among teachers and students and proposed major events in each department of secondary schools.
Deputy Regional Executive Officer Mr. Seewchand suggested using the challenges faced by the Education Department as a guideline for the 2024 budget. He encouraged head teachers and officers to build on the successes of 2023.
Regional Executive Officer Dwight John announced plans for new educational facilities, including a secondary school in Wiruni and the revitalization of the secondary school in Hururu, both in the Berbice River, and a new nursery and primary school in Malali in the Upper Demerara River.
The meeting concluded with a call to continue and improve educational outcomes in Region Ten in the coming year.
