Amerindian Heritage Month is a time to celebrate Guyana’s Indigenous heritage and promote greater appreciation for Amerindian culture and traditions.
Throughout the month, Guyanese will have opportunities to experience traditional Amerindian foods, crafts, attire and a range of cultural activities.
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs kicked off the month-long observances on Monday with an interfaith prayer service at the Umana Yana, under the theme, “Observing Our Cultural Heritage During Our Diamond Jubilee.”
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne Shadeek said the service provides an opportunity to give thanks and seek guidance and blessings for the year ahead.
The Minister also reflected on the challenges of the past year, including the MV Barima tragedy, which claimed several lives and affected families across the country, particularly Indigenous communities.
She said the interfaith service is also an opportunity to pray for protection and a safer year ahead.
“We want to pray for blessings on the country so that the year ahead will be one of, you know, less, I don’t want to say troubles, but accidents, less mishaps, less unfortunate circumstances. And we look to God for his blessings, for his guidance, protection, always,” she said.
The official opening of Amerindian Heritage Month is set for Tuesday, September 1, at the Sophia Exhibition Centre. Several activities are planned throughout the month, including heritage sports, an Amerindian heritage pageant, cultural nights and other events celebrating Guyana’s Indigenous heritage.
