Amerindian Development Gets Boost in Budget 2025

January 23, 2025

In a bid to continue empowering the Amerindian community, Budget 2025 allocates a significant $7.2 billion for Amerindian development, with key initiatives aimed at accelerating land titling, youth entrepreneurship, and education.

Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Hon. Pauline Sukhai, highlighted the progress of several ongoing programs, particularly the Youth Entrepreneurship and Apprenticeship Programme.

This program will receive $1.5 billion to support over 2,700 Community Service Officers.

The initiative, according to Minister Sukhai, has already seen great success in empowering young Amerindians by training them in various fields.

Speaking on the “Budget in Focus” program, Sukhai also noted the government’s commitment to land titling, with $650 million allocated to accelerate the titling and demarcation of Amerindian lands.

Currently, Amerindian communities hold titled rights to 16.4% of Guyana’s landmass, making them the largest landowners after the state. Minister Sukhai emphasized that this remains a key priority for the government.

Additionally, the budget includes $127 million to assist 800 hinterland youths in pursuing secondary education and $5 billion for economic, ecotourism, agricultural, and infrastructure projects.

Another notable allocation is $150 million to support the National Toshaos Council Conference, ensuring that the voices of indigenous leaders are heard and represented in national discussions.

These investments reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to advancing the social and economic well-being of Amerindian communities.
