Amerindian communities will receive an additional $2.5 billion in funding this year through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, bringing the total amount of money disbursed under the programme to $16.9 billion to support sustainable development initiatives in Indigenous villages across Guyana.
This will pave the way for more social and infrastructure projects that will transform the lives of residents in over 240 villages. At the heart of this strategy is the guarantee that 15% of all carbon credit revenue earned under the national carbon credit programme is directly allocated to Indigenous and hinterland communities to be managed themselves in accordance with their own priorities.
The announcement of the disbursement was made on Tuesday by Vice President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo at the National Toshaos Conference (NTC) being held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).
A key component of LCDS 2030 is the empowerment of Amerindian and hinterland communities through village-led development plans, ensuring that these communities are not only included in the country’s sustainable development journey but are active participants and decision-makers in the process.
