Amidst the ongoing strike by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) for higher salaries, the government is exploring alternative teaching methods to prevent interruptions in learning.
This was highlighted during a press conference earlier today by Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, the General Secretary of the PPP/C.
Since the strike began on February 5, the Ministry of Education has been taking measures to ensure continued learning for students.
Daily teaching sessions are being provided through platforms like the Guyana Learning Channel, radio broadcasts, and worksheets available on the ministry’s website, catering to students at every level.
However, with the GTU threatening to extend the strike, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the importance of exploring alternative methods, especially considering the challenges faced by single parents.
“The effects of the strike are particularly challenging for single mothers,” stated Dr. Jagdeo during the press conference.
He further explained that while the government acknowledges the demands of the GTU, sustaining them may not be feasible.
“The request being made by the GTU cannot be sustained,” Dr. Jagdeo asserted.
The strike, led by the Guyana Teachers Union, has been ongoing for several days, with teachers advocating for higher salaries.
Despite this, the government maintains that the strike is illegal and politicized.
They highlighted that significant measures for teachers’ welfare, including salary increases, have been implemented since 2020.
As negotiations continue, the government is actively seeking solutions to ensure that the education of Guyana’s students is not compromised.
