A number of airstrips across Guyana are set to be rehabilitated to improve access to the hinterland regions.
These include the airstrips at Kaieteur, Eteringbang, Karisparau, and Lethem, among others.
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill provided updates on the ongoing works, highlighting the importance of these upgrades in boosting commercial trade and operations between the coastland and the hinterland.
He noted that the Kaieteur airstrip is being extended with support from the Engineering Battalion of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), while work is progressing on the Eteringbang airstrip in collaboration with the GDF as well.
Minister Edghill shared that the Paramakatoi airstrip is near completion, with the installation of drainage systems and repairs to the fence.
The Mabaruma airstrip has also undergone repairs, though it will require ongoing attention.
Additionally, the Pariuma airstrip has been completed and is currently in its defects liability period, with remedial works underway to ensure it remains operational for the benefit of the local community.
Residents of Karisparau have been assured that their airstrip will also be completed soon.
In response to requests for more airstrips, Minister Edghill highlighted ongoing plans to build airstrips in Shulinab, Aishalton, and Chenapau.
Furthermore, air navigational services are being expanded in Mahdia and Lethem, which are among the busiest domestic flight zones in the hinterland.
Earlier this year, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo announced plans to develop an international airstrip at Lethem.
A budget of 2.3 billion dollars was allocated this year for the rehabilitation and maintenance of airstrips across the country, aiming to enhance connectivity and support economic growth in the hinterland regions.
