Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall SC has strongly rejected what he describes as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the country’s extradition laws, attributing this to the arguments being made during the Mohamed’s extradition case.
During last evening’s edition of ‘Issues in the News’, the AG noted that over the course of the extradition case involving US indicted businessmen Azruddin and Nazar Mohamed, Guyana’s Fugitive Offenders law was distorted by the defense.
Nandlall made it clear that the extradition proceedings currently before the Magistrates Court are lawful and rooted in long-standing legal practice.
“The high court as late as 2018 examined the constitutionality of those very provisions and affirmed the constitutionality. In other words the high court rejected similar arguments that Mr. Forde is advancing now, rejected those arguments and declared the law to be constitutional,” he said.
The Attorney General warned that the defense attorneys were undermining public confidence in the justice system by advancing misleading narratives in court.
He emphasised, “When they are not getting their way, they accuse the court of being biased, they accuse the court of unfair treatment , they accuse the attorney general, the government, the vice president, the president and they are misleading the population.”
The AG’s comments come as extradition proceedings involving the father and son duo are before the Magistrate court.
The matter is set to continue on Thursday, with additional witnesses, including two police officers, still expected to take the stand.
