Attorney General Anil Nandlall has defended the government’s decision to seek a settlement in the High Court regarding land acquisition at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, a matter directly linked to the construction of the new bridge across the Demerara River.
Minister Nandlall explained that the negotiation process with the affected residents began in 2022, allowing residents to retain their own lawyers to oversee the transaction.
Despite comprehensive compensatory measures being offered, only one resident objected to the process.
The Attorney General highlighted that both the government’s Valuation Department and a private valuation officer were engaged to ensure a fair and transparent process.
He emphasized that residents were offered various options, including land, house and land, or monetary compensation.
Minister Nandlall also addressed accusations of discrimination by the government, affirming the administration’s commitment to fairness and legality.
He acknowledged the right of some residents to take the matter to court, emphasizing that the government respects this choice and is prepared to resolve the issue through legal means.
Under the Acquisition of Lands for Public Purposes (Amendment) Act, the government is authorized to acquire land for the construction of public works or other public purposes, regardless of existing buildings or structures on the land.
