The Alliance for Change (AFC) has faced significant criticism following its recent refusal to respond to questions from the press.

During a recent press conference, AFC Executive member Cathy Hughes dismissed a reporter’s inquiry regarding the party’s alleged involvement in the rigging of the 2020 elections.

Hughes expressed that the party preferred to address more current issues rather than revisit past discussions.

The incident drew sharp remarks from Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Jagdeo questioned the AFC’s credibility, suggesting that the party’s refusal to engage with the media on key issues raised concerns about their transparency and accountability.

He also noted that had a member of the PPP made similar remarks, the response from the press would have been far more critical.

The Guyana Press Association (GPA) was also mentioned, as Jagdeo pointed out the lack of a strong reaction from the association in contrast to their usual stance when PPP officials are involved in similar controversies.

He suggested that this inconsistency could lead to further doubts about the AFC’s standing as a political party.

This refusal to engage with the press and the ongoing controversy surrounding the issue have brought into question the AFC’s credibility and their approach to handling accountability in the public eye.
