As El Nino conditions persist, posing challenges for farmers due to drying conservancies, additional pumps are being installed across Guyana to pump water back into the conservancies and provide relief to cash crop and rice farmers.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali recently inspected the ongoing works and met with farmers of Canals Number One and Two to assess the situation.

The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) is spearheading the installation of pumps in affected areas to ensure water is replenished in conservancies and canals, allowing farmers access to vital irrigation.

President Ali addressed farmers, informing them of the long-term solution in progress—the construction of the Hope-like canal set to commence by mid-year.

Farmers expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts in sustaining and enhancing production in the region.

They acknowledged the significance of the ongoing works in alleviating their struggles and enhancing agricultural productivity.

In addition to the pump installations, irrigation works will be carried out in the area this week in preparation for the upcoming wet season.

The Local Hydromet Office has forecasted increased wet spells expected from now until May in several regions, necessitating proactive measures to ensure adequate water supply for farming activities.

President Ali’s inspection underscores the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and mitigating the impact of adverse weather conditions on agricultural production.

By investing in infrastructure and irrigation systems, the government aims to enhance food security and promote sustainable agriculture across Guyana.
