Region Six, one of the country’s key agricultural regions, have been placed on high alert to conserve water for farming purposes amid the El Nino period.

In an interview with NCN News, MP Hussain spoke aboutimportance of farmers practicing effective water management during this time to ensure maximum production.

“Ensure that we minimize the amount of water that we’re using because you know sometimes people have a tendency to waste water. Water management is important during this dry spell here because we don’t want to find ourselves in a situation where this dry spell period will hamper the production or farming. So, we got to be very careful,” he said.

Rice farmers too are being urged to use water only when necessary and at specific intervals, helping to reduce excessive water consumption.

For those cultivating cash crops, MP Hussain is recommending the use of shade houses, along with other water-saving methods, to maximize production during this period.

“There’s techniques that we need to use in terms of planting. The shade house, in terms of cash crop, the shade house method is very good because you use less amounts of water. Then the drip system in the cash crop is also important,” he said.
According to the Guyana Hydrometerlogical Service, the current El Niño phenomenon is likely to persist through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.

During this period, Guyana is expected to experience fewer wet days and prolonged dry spells, coupled with higher temperatures and increased evaporation.
