A 30-year-old construction worker from Number Five Village, West Coast Berbice, is dead following a collision with a motor lorry last Saturday.

Dead is Steve McAlmont of Lot 10, No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice, who was involved in a collision with a motor lorry around 11:30 a.m. at the bridge separating No. 4 and No. 5 villages.

Police said McAlmont ran across the road from north to south when he was struck by motor lorry GAR 4204, driven by 27-year-old Joseph Wilson of Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice, which was travelling east at about 50 kilometres per hour.

The man was dragged some 40 feet away from the point of impact into No. 4 Village before he was taken to the Bath Regional Hospital in an unconscious condition and was pronounced dead on arrival.

His brother, Tony Khan recounted the moments leading to McAlmont’s demise.

”Me brother went at the shop and when he come out from the shop he stand up next to the road corner with an umbrella cover and he make a one step with he foot and shortly after they say that how they hear a blam and that was all. By the time they look they see the body on the ground,” Khan relayed.

McAlmont, a former Guyana Defence Force soldier, sustained broken legs and other life-threatening injuries.

Khan remembered his brother as a good-hearted young man, whose tragic passing has left the family mourning his sudden passing.

”He does normally gyaff with we and he was ok. Normally you know family does get them lil ups and downs and that was it, nothing much. We’re very hurt about it but it is what it is,” he said.

The driver of the lorry was taken into custody as investigations into the fatal accident continue.
