The Government says efforts to identify victims and return them to their families remain a key priority as recovery operations continue following the MV Barima tragedy, with 30 people still unaccounted for.

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips announced on Friday that the total number of bodies recovered has risen to 73.

Of those, 69 have been positively identified.

The Prime Minister said 63 bodies have already been released to their families, while arrangements continue to transport victims back to their respective communities for burial.

As of Friday, 22 funerals had been completed.

Phillips said the Government continues to work closely with families throughout the identification and release process to ensure their loved ones are laid to rest with dignity.

He reaffirmed that the administration remains committed to standing beside every family affected by the tragedy.

“The Government of Guyana continues to stand with the families of those we have lost and all those impacted by this tragedy,” the Prime Minister said.

Authorities continue to provide logistical support for transportation, identification and funeral arrangements, while search and recovery efforts remain ongoing.
